The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, insists to the State to become aware of the situation of public safety on the Island, with the aim of being able to take the necessary measures to strengthen the personnel.
Despite having reiterated this on numerous occasions, through meetings and written communications, «we have not received solutions from the State to a situation that concerns us, even more so considering the population increase that Fuerteventura has experienced in recent years.»
In one of the latest written communications (January 2025), the insular Corporation requested the delegate of the Government in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, and the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, to visit the Island to address this issue with local institutions and groups. A request that the Ministry referred to the General Directorate of the Civil Guard to organize a meeting «of which we have no news so far.»
For this reason, and due to the increase in incidents recorded on the Island during the first quarter of 2025, the president of the Cabildo has sent a letter to the General Directorate of the Civil Guard to insist on the urgent need for this meeting.
«We want Fuerteventura to remain a peaceful Island, for the well-being of our citizens. In this sense, the competent authorities must act accordingly, as we have requested,» García concludes.
This same request has also been forwarded to Anselmo Pestana as the delegate of the Government and to the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo.
