La Laguna premia la igualdad en ámbito profesional y vecinal
This Friday, the Leal Theater in La Laguna will host the sixth edition of the Women’s Recognition Gala of the municipality, an institutional event honoring the trajectory of women or associations from La Laguna who have stood out for their social contribution. Teófila Acosta Ramos, the Women’s Magarza Association, and the attention devices of the Insular Institute of Social and Health Care (SIAM) and MUVISA have been the winners of this edition, according to an agreement of the Municipal Women’s Council. The event will start at 8:00 pm with free entry until full capacity is reached and will feature a musical performance by Luisa Machado and Alberto Méndez.
The Councilor for Equality and Women, Dailos González, points out that «these awards represent a well-deserved tribute to a task that deserves to be valued. The program for March 8th in La Laguna has the motto ‘Together building equality’ and there is no doubt that our awardees have contributed throughout their careers to advancing equality in various areas: professional, neighborhood participation, and attention and prevention of gender-based violence.»
As part of the events agenda taking place throughout this month, on Saturday the 15th, the Aguere Space will host the third edition of UrbanA La Laguna, dedicated to urban music, starting at 6:30 pm, featuring artists K1za (Madrid), Elane (Barcelona), Jela X Bliss (Tenerife), Lua Kosta + Dj Zanet. Next week, the activities will continue with the Awards of the More Women Association (Wednesday the 19th at the Leal Theater), a workshop led by María Martín Barranco (Friday the 21st at the Orfeón La Paz), and the Matria concert and the Magarza Festival (Saturday the 22nd at the El Tranvía and San Bartolomé de Geneto community centers, respectively).
Awardees
Teófila Acosta Ramos symbolizes how women have paved the way in traditionally male-dominated professions. She was the second woman in Tenerife to obtain a bus driver’s license, dedicating herself to this profession for 34 years. Additionally, she has maintained her commitment to the community as the president of the San Joaquín and Santa Ana Seniors Association in El Ortigal, which is still active and serving the elderly in the area.
The Women’s Magarza Association was established in November 1996 as a project motivated by the need to create a meeting forum for women, who have always been present in the cultural, social, festive, and advocacy activities of San Bartolomé de Geneto. Currently, the Magarza women continue to work alongside other neighborhood collectives of various kinds, forming the Center’s Council, through which they jointly organize and manage all activities: cultural events, courses, workshops, training, informational, festive, leisure activities, meetings, etc.
Finally, both the Integral Women’s Care Device of La Laguna (MUVISA) and the Insular Women’s Care Service of La Laguna (SIAM) have assisted hundreds of women and contributed to the prevention of gender-based violence. Their main purpose is to ensure the safety of women and their daughters and sons so that they can continue their lives in a dignified and safe manner. These are specialized and essential services whose confidential work (to safeguard the protection of women and their daughters and sons) may go unnoticed among the population.
