La Laguna alineará proyectos de entidades sociales con Plan de Discapacidad municipal
The City Council of La Laguna, through the Department of Social Welfare and Quality of Life, held a new session of the municipality’s Disability Council on Friday, during which one of the highlighted items on the agenda was the establishment of unified criteria to ensure that projects submitted for aid and subsidies from the City Council guarantee accessibility and personal autonomy for the population.
The Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, emphasized that the purpose of this measure is to align all proposals promoted by associations with the work axes of the municipality’s Disability Plan. This work will be coordinated through the various committees, which have been meeting since last October.
The Mayor recalled that «this strategic document has been the result of close collaboration maintained between the entities and the local Corporation itself, to obtain a real map of the disability situation in the municipality and, at the same time, to set the roadmap for our territory to advance under fundamental criteria such as universal accessibility, inclusion, and social justice.»
In this same line, the Councilor for Social Welfare, María Cruz, emphasized that this measure will also be coordinated with the Observatory for the Promotion of Personal Autonomy, a recently created body that allows us to collect, analyze, and systematize the work carried out in the municipality in the field of disability. She also noted that this process will also include European criteria, which are setting the standard for other territories that are also reference points in this area.
During this first Disability Council meeting of the year, the progress of the collaborative website ‘La Laguna sin murallas’ (www.lalagunasinmurallas.com) was also presented. This interactive portal aims to be a meeting space that continues the collaborative effort and an opportunity to continue working to build a municipality and a community that allows all individuals their integral development, enhancing their projects of personal autonomy and full participation in social life.
On this online portal, set up by the City Council within the municipal website, groups that wish to do so can upload all events, best practices, and any information they consider relevant for the knowledge of the citizenry.
This meeting also served for the Defender of Persons with Disabilities in La Laguna, Yaiza Pérez, to present the main demands of this sector of the population in the municipality regarding aspects such as the removal of physical barriers, streamlining procedures, or integration into the world of sports. All these contributions have already been forwarded to the various departments and competent authorities to be addressed as soon as possible.
