La edición 2025 de ‘Mujeres en la playa’ supera todas las previsiones
The call for this year’s municipal program for the promotion of health and social cohesion, Women at the Beach, has exceeded all expectations, with 1,227 applications for 1,210 spots, a capacity that had already been expanded for the year 2025. The number of applicants for 8 out of the 20 weekly routes exceeds availability, which is why, in accordance with the rules and to ensure transparency and fairness, the Department of Social Welfare and Muvisa held a public draw today based on the initials of last names, with the letter ‘R’ being selected. This initial phase will be followed by the analysis of combinations and reinforcement of routes with the awarded transport company or constantly updated waiting lists, with immediate monitoring and rotation of vacancies thanks to the digital technology for user control and monitoring provided by Muvisa.
The Women at the Beach program has become a logistical challenge, as evidenced in the bidding process for the transport service for this initiative, which covers more than 30 towns and neighborhoods in all districts of La Laguna. The organization of the program is divided into two groups of over 600 women, with trips two days a week for each group, requiring a dozen buses daily from and to various points in the municipality.
This free initiative for the promotion of health, leisure, and free time, aimed at women aged 55 and over and registered in the municipality, has been deeply rooted in the community for years. Its popularity, demonstrated by the increasing number of applicants each year, is reinforced by how quickly vacancies are filled as they become available due to abandonment or health reasons throughout each cycle. The goal is that "no woman is left out."
This annual program, as highlighted by the Councilor for Social Welfare of the La Laguna City Council, María Cruz, has become a significant asset not only for the promotion of health and healthy aging but also for its undeniable contribution to the physical and emotional well-being of users. It plays a fundamental role in social cohesion by bringing together women from all towns and neighborhoods of La Laguna, creating bonds that serve as a powerful tool against unwanted loneliness.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Municipal Housing and Services Society (Muvisa) of La Laguna is responsible for managing this free program, which will take place in two phases: from March 19 to June 10 and from September 22 to November 20. Women at the Beach includes transportation and adapted activities with monitors at Las Teresitas beach, including gymnastics, aquagym, and workshops focused on enhancing cognitive skills.
Individual Communication with Each User
The organization emphasizes the logistical and organizational challenge of the project, for which digital control systems have been implemented to continue improving this support network and address the challenges of La Laguna’s aging population. All communication is carried out individually with users via SMS or other contact methods they have provided in their application, allowing them to be notified in advance about their assigned spot or about an available vacancy.
In this edition, 8 routes have exceeded the available spots, including routes from the old bus station, Geneto, Guamasa, La Candelaria – La Cuesta neighborhood, Los Majuelos, San Benito, San Matías, and Valle de Guerra. Out of the 1,227 applications submitted within the set deadline, 147 are from new users, while the rest are from women who have participated in previous editions, demonstrating a high level of repetition and interest in the program.
For these "saturated" routes, the public draw was held today, and in the coming days, the final list of allocated spots will be published on the municipal website. However, Muvisa explains that, "regardless of the fact that the activities begin on the 19th and with all data updated, we will work with the transport company to explore options to combine and reinforce routes, as well as to offer available spots on less crowded routes close to women on the waiting list, with the intention of allowing applicants to join the program as soon as possible."
Priority will be given to applications submitted within the deadline and in accordance with the rules of this call, available at https://www.aytolalaguna.es/actualidad/noticias/La-edicion-2025-de-Mujeres-en-la-playasupera-todas-las-previsiones-con-1.227-solicitudes/. Once all vacancies are filled, applications submitted after the deadline will be considered for the program.
