The Sports Councilor Yurguen Hernández highlights “the enormous quality of the athletes who train in the island facilities”
The Miraflores Sports City becomes the venue for international athletics tests. National and international teams use the island facilities for their training in preparation for championships. This is the case for the German Relay Team, who conducted tests this week at the Palma facility to determine the athletes who will compete in this year’s World Championships in China in that discipline.
Sports Councilor Yurguen Hernández emphasizes “the enormous quality of the athletes who train in the island facilities” and highlights “the progress that the Miraflores Sports City has made in recent years, with the introduction of notable elements such as the ‘photo finish’, which significantly enhances the quality of the venue”.
On her part, the Tourism Councilor, Raquel Rebollo, points out that “the large number of outstanding athletes who frequent La Palma has a significant impact on our economy, not only in terms of advertising, as they have millions of followers, but also in island hotels and establishments”.
The arrival of these elite athletes to the island is crucial thanks to the role of local athletes Samuel García and Jesús Crossa, who through their company, La Palma Training Camp, enable these top-level competitors to choose La Palma for their training.
Athletes who have been Olympic champions like Malaika Mihambo, or World or European champions like Simon Ehammer or Rebekka Haase, are evidence of the level that has passed through the island territory. Moreover, figures with global influence, such as the German athlete Alica Schmit, with over five million followers on social media, are a sign of the significant positive impact that these international athletes have had on La Palma.
