The storm Martinho will put more than half of Spain on alert this Thursday, with areas of Asturias, Cantabria, and Galicia under orange alert, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). La Palma will be under a yellow alert for wind in mountain summits and coastal areas to the east and west of the island in the late afternoon.
In this way, the wind will blow from the west and be moderate, with intervals of strong winds and probable very strong gusts in high areas of the south and the El Paso area during the early morning, with occasional very strong gusts not ruled out in the east slope, associated with the windward side; in the afternoon, it will shift to the northeast.
REST OF THE COUNTRY
Specifically, the Cordillera and Picos de Europa (Principality of Asturias) and Liébana (Cantabria) will be under orange alert for wind, while A Coruña and Pontevedra (Galicia) will be under alert for waves.
The rest of the wind alerts will be in La Palma (Canary Islands); Ribera del Ebro in La Rioja (La Rioja); Álava, Guipúzcoa, and Vizcaya (Basque Country); Cantabrian slope of Navarra, Central Navarra, Navarre Pyrenees, and Ribera del Ebro in Navarra (Navarre); Sierra de Madrid (Community of Madrid); A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense, and Pontevedra (Galicia); Lleida (Catalonia); Cuenca and Guadalajara (Castilla-La Mancha); Ávila, Burgos, León, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Valladolid, and Zamora (Castilla y León); Central and Valle de Villaverde and Cantabria del Ebro (Cantabria); Mallorca (Balearic Islands); Southwestern Asturias (Principality of Asturias); Huesca and Zaragoza (Aragon); and Huelva and Jaén (Andalusia).
Additionally, the rest of the wave alerts will be in Almería, Cádiz, Granada, Huelva, and Málaga (Andalusia); and La Palma (Canary Islands). Likewise, there will be alerts for rain in Cáceres (Extremadura); Ávila, Salamanca, and Zamora (Castilla y León); and Cádiz, Córdoba, Huelva, and Seville (Andalusia). On the other hand, Cádiz and Huelva (Andalusia) will be under alert for storms; and Ávila, Salamanca, and Segovia (Castilla y León) for thawing.
AEMET predicts that the day will be marked by instability on the Iberian Peninsula due to the passage of a front associated with storm Martinho. In this way, very cloudy or overcast skies with precipitation advancing from west to east will prevail, although they will be less likely in the Cantabrian region. On this day, there is a low probability that the front will reach the eastern third of the peninsula, where it is expected that the entry of Mediterranean humidity will leave some light rain.
By regions, the state agency specifies that precipitation will be more abundant in the west of the Central System, the Cantabrian mountain range, and Andalusia. There, showers may also occur, which may become strong and be accompanied by thunderstorms on the coasts. Likewise, there may be possible snowfall in the Central System, Cantabrian mountain range, and Sierra Nevada above 2000 meters, lowering to 1600/1800 meters. As for the archipelagos, no precipitation is expected in the Balearic Islands, where there will be cloudy skies giving way to intervals of high clouds. Meanwhile, in the Canary Islands, the tail of the front will bring light rain to the highest islands, which will be more abundant in La Palma.
The forecast indicates that maximum temperatures will rise in the Balearic Islands, southeastern and northeastern peninsular regions, with a notable increase in the Pyrenees. Additionally, there will be a predominance of decreases in the western third of the peninsula, more pronounced in the southwest. On the contrary, minimum temperatures will rise in a generalized manner, with a local increase in the interior of the southwestern peninsula. On this day, only weak frosts are expected in high areas of the Pyrenees.
AEMET concludes that there will be moderate winds from the south and east in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands with strong intervals in most of the northwest quadrant, Cantabrian region, upper and middle Ebro, Pyrenees, eastern South Meseta, western extremity, and high areas of the eastern half of Andalusia, Alborán, and parts of Mallorca. In particular, gusts may become hurricane-force in the peaks of the Cantabrian region. Similarly, very strong gusts may also occur in other parts of Andalusia and the South Meseta. In the Canary Islands, there will be moderate winds from the west shifting to the north.
