The Cabildo de Tenerife, in collaboration with the Ayuntamiento de Arafo, is organizing the ‘Festival Isla Violeta’ next Saturday at the plaza de San Juan Degollado and the Auditorio Juan Carlos I in the southern municipality.
This initiative by the insular direction of Equality and Diversity of the insular corporation, which will take place between 10:00 and 21:00 hours, promotes gender equality and offers a diverse program that includes cultural activities, workshops, conferences, and exhibitions aimed at raising awareness and educating about gender equity.
The event presentation held this Monday was attended by the insular director of Equality and Diversity, Patricia León; the mayor of Arafo, Juan Ramón Martín, and the councilor of Education, Citizen Participation, Commerce, and Equality, Mercedes Gracia.
Patricia León thanked the effort made by the Ayuntamiento de Arafo «to host this event that is designed for all families,» as well as the technical staff of the Cabildo «for carrying out this initiative, which involves a lot of coordination.»
«Our goal is to promote community participation to build a fairer and more equal society, and this is one of the actions we carry out from the Cabildo to achieve it,» she pointed out.
For his part, the mayor of Arafo, Juan Ramón Martín, invited everyone to visit Arafo next Saturday: «Normally these festivals are held in larger municipalities, so we reiterate our thanks to the Cabildo for bringing it to our municipality and offering a wide range of activities throughout the day.»
Martín stated that collaborating with the festival is «strengthening» the work in Arafo, which is the «commitment to equality between men and women.»
In his opinion, «it is a struggle of women in all areas and sectors and of all ages that we must continue to support.»
Mercedes Gracia assured that it will be «an intense day full of activities» and detailed that the Ayuntamiento de Arafo has prepared the poetry and music meeting ‘Mujeres en Verso’ with Felicidad Batista, Davinia Trujillo, and Aileen López.
LITERATURE WRITTEN BY WOMEN
The objective of this activity is to highlight literature written by women and their role in equality.
Under the slogan ‘We imagine, we weave, we dance, and we narrate a more violet island,’ the event will host various activities including the construction of a collaborative mural, craft workshops, fanzine, dance, storytelling, music, and poetry, as well as showcasing different exhibitions.
Thus, the Insular Center for Information, Counseling, and Documentation for Gender Equality of the Cabildo will present exhibitions on ‘Rural Women, Working Women,’ ‘The conquest of women’s rights,’ and ‘Women writers.’
Additionally, between 10:15 and 14:15 hours and between 16:00 and 18:00 hours, a collaborative and participatory mural ‘Weave and recognize the past’ will be carried out in the plaza de Arafo under the coordination of Elia Estévez and Paula Calavera.
In the evening session, there will be a panel discussion ‘Plowing to narrate’ with Sofía Ramos, Daniasa Curbelo, María José Guerra, and Rut Angielina.
