El Cabildo de Tenerife invierte 17 millones en 70 nuevas guaguas interurbanas eléctricas
The Cabildo de Tenerife’s Government Council has approved a new allocation of 17 million euros on Wednesday for the purchase of 70 new buses that will be incorporated into Titsa’s service in 2026.
This investment will allow the company to have interurban buses that are 100% electric for the first time, operating between municipalities with daily routes of up to 310 kilometers—a measure unprecedented in the Canary Islands.
President of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, announced in a press conference that the 17 million euro investment for the new buses "adds to the eight million already budgeted for 2025, making a total commitment of 25 million euros."
She also stated that "only six million more are needed to complete the total financing of this second batch, which amounts to 31 million euros."
Dávila highlighted that this is an "ambitious green revolution" because "in addition to being completely sustainable, zero emissions, with lower noise pollution and a reduced environmental impact, these buses meet the real connectivity needs between municipalities."
The eight electric buses will be added to lines 051 and 057, connecting various areas in the north of the island from the Intercambiador de La Laguna with Tacoronte, Tejina, Valle Guerra, Tegueste, Guamasas, and Las Canteras.
In addition to the electric buses, 13 double-decker buses and others up to 15 meters in length will be added, many of them destined for the south of Tenerife, where the routes are more congested.
This renewal will double the passenger capacity per vehicle from 65 to 110 seats, significantly improving comfort and service efficiency.
Furthermore, Dávila reported that by the end of May, Titsa had surpassed 35.5 million passengers, two million more than in the same period last year.
"This growth reflects the increasing confidence of the public in a service that we are thoroughly transforming to be more useful, comfortable, and efficient," she noted.
According to Dávila, this evolution is "directly related" to the Modernization and Reinforcement Plan, with a total investment of 113.4 million euros between 2024 and 2026, including the addition of over 300 new buses.
CHEQUE GUARDERÍA
Moreover, the Government Council approved the bases and call for the third edition of the ‘cheque guardería’ for the 2025/2026 school year, with an investment of 1.3 million euros, which could be increased to two million euros depending on demand.
This initiative will allow families to receive up to 800 euros to cover essential expenses such as enrollment, custody, hygiene, food, and school clothing, while also granting freedom of choice regarding the childcare center.
The application period starts on the first business day following the publication of the regulatory bases and the summary of the call in the Official Gazette of the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, ending on October 31, 2025.
Dávila explained that the goal is to "alleviate" the economic burden on households, enabling parents to continue their professional careers while their children receive necessary care at childcare centers.
"This assistance not only eases the financial strain but also allows many mothers, and I say this because 80% of parental leaves are still taken by them, to not have to give up their jobs due to lack of childcare options. This measure also promotes work-life balance," she emphasized.
The president mentioned that the last call received 2,034 applications, a 36% increase from the previous year.
"This figure confirms that this measure is effective, useful, and needs to be reinforced," she remarked.
Additionally, she added that during this term, they aim to reach over 6,000 families, having already exceeded half of this number in the first two calls, with an investment of over 2.6 million euros.
On the other hand, the Minister of Employment and Education, Efraín Medina, expressed gratitude for the effort made by the department to ensure that the aid "has been delivered on time and in the proper manner," emphasizing the fundamental support for early childhood education.
"Educational assistance provides tools and guidance to families and caregivers, reducing inequalities and helping vulnerable families to offer their children a solid foundation regardless of their socioeconomic level," he explained.
Medina also pointed out that family and work-life balance "is crucial as it facilitates parents to work or study while their children are in safe educational spaces."
LEADING IN AID
The Cabildo de Tenerife has established the "most ambitious and generous" scholarship policy in all of Spain, reaching a historic milestone not only in the Canary Islands but throughout the country.
For the 2024-2025 academic year, the island corporation has allocated 13 million euros, representing the largest investment in scholarships in its history and the highest among all local administrations in the country.
Throughout the current term, it is expected that over 7,000 scholarships will be granted in the current academic year, with a perspective of benefiting more than 30,000 families during this term.
The Cabildo de Tenerife will allocate over one million euros to improve the Youth Centers in the municipalities of Tenerife. This was announced by the President of the Island Corporation, Rosa Dávila, and the Vice President, Lope Afonso, in the press conference held after the Government Council meeting today (Wednesday 4).
In the Government Council, a new call for aid was also approved, with an investment of over one million euros, aimed at municipalities for the rehabilitation of the Youth Centers in Tenerife.
The Insular Network of Youth Centers is spread across 27 municipalities on the island, and the objective of the aid is to ensure that these spaces are in better conditions to continue offering activities, workshops, and useful services to the youth.
Improvements range from enhancing facades and bathrooms to soundproofing or the elimination of architectural barriers.
Within the Department of Innovation, Research, and Development, a budget of 180,000 euros was approved for the development of the program for the Promotion of Equality and Women’s Empowerment.
Specifically, the Cabildo is providing this amount to the Tenerife Science and Technology Park (PCTT) for the development of the ‘Unstoppable Girls’ and ‘WomenTech Tenerife’ programs.
Likewise, the Government Council approved the educational cooperation agreement between the Insular Cabildo of Tenerife and the National University of Distance Education (UNED) for the completion of external internships for students of the university within the corporation and its public sector on the island.
