The CIFP Felo Monzón Grau-Bassas, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, will host the I Congress of Athletics of the Canary Islands on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 13 and 14, where professionals in health, training, inclusion, and performance will share knowledge and experiences.
The congress, driven by the students of the Athletic Sports Education at the center, expects the participation of more than 250 people each day including students, sports professionals, and interested public, as reported by the organization in a press release, aiming to «reactivate the practice of athletics and convey to the public that this discipline goes far beyond running.»
Therefore, the program includes presentations and workshops on nutrition, health, women and sports, doping, performance, sports medicine, adapted athletics, and trail running, among others.
Among the invited speakers are Antonio R. Gordillo, president of the Anti-Doping Commission of the Canary Islands; Ana Toral, Spanish champion of middle-distance running; and Covadonga Mateos, former international high-performance athlete and university professor. There will also be round tables with sports management professionals and trail running, as well as practical experiences such as the workshop on physiotherapy applied to injuries in athletics.
Thus, this Tuesday, May 13, will start at 09:15 hours with the intervention of sports nutrition expert David Rodríguez, who will address the effectiveness, safety, and ethics of supplementation in high-performance sports. He will be followed by the physical trainer of the Spanish Olympic sailing team, Diego Quintana, with a presentation on the key aspects of physical preparation for elite athletes, based on his extensive experience in the Olympic Games.
Also, the athlete and coach Ana Toral, Spanish champion of middle-distance running, will offer a talk on how to adapt training to the female menstrual cycle, providing practical guidelines and recommendations from her professional and personal experience in high-level competition; while in the afternoon, Ramón Domínguez, an Olympic judge with over 40 years of experience, will reflect on what arbitration can teach in the sports and educational fields.
This day will conclude with a practical workshop offered by physiotherapist Javier Rodríguez, focusing on the most common injuries in athletics and the recovery processes based on physiotherapy and strength training.
The day on Wednesday, May 14, will start with a presentation by Antonio R. Gordillo, president of the Anti-Doping Commission of the Canary Islands, addressing the controversial topic of doping in sports, followed by Mariona Masdemont, responsible for the Paralympic Relay Program, who will discuss the current state of adapted athletics in the Canary Islands, offering a committed and inclusive view of the sport.
In the afternoon, it will be the turn of trail running coach and runner Xim Van Stokkum, who will give a presentation on the training methodology in trail running, and the congress will be closed by Covadonga Mateos, former international high-performance athlete and university professor, who will share her perspective on the demands and experiences of training in elite sports.
