La Gomera promueve la conciencia ecológica con talleres de reciclaje creativo

The Cabildo will offer creative recycling workshops to promote ecological awareness among the population. Thus, under the title ‘La Gomera Recicla’, the six municipalities of the island will host practical workshops in public spaces between May 19 and 25, combining sustainability, creativity, and citizen participation.

Residents of all ages from Agulo, Hermigua, Vallehermoso, Valle Gran Rey, San Sebastián, and Alajeró will have the opportunity to participate in free workshops where they will learn to reuse recyclable materials from selective collection, giving life to new objects such as decorative lamps, reusable bags, and small terrariums that each participant can take home.

The President of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, emphasized the importance of this initiative «as part of the island’s roadmap towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly model.» He added that «it is not just about recycling, but about transforming our way of consuming, producing, and coexisting with the environment around us, and activities like these help sow awareness, especially among the new generations.»

For her part, the insular councilor for Tourism, Commerce, and Consumption, María Isabel Méndez, reported that the launch of these workshops «is part of the prelude to the Month of the Environment, with the aim of contributing our grain of sand from the areas of Tourism and Commerce.» She insisted that the goal is to raise awareness about the importance of moving towards a more sustainable model, «promoting actions such as recycling, reuse, and waste reduction. Sustainability is a commitment we must all assume.»

Méndez highlighted the importance of materializing proposals that connect the circular economy with citizen participation. «Recycling is not only an environmental issue but also an opportunity to generate economic awareness, innovation, and new models of local development,» she said.

This action is promoted by Turismo de La Gomera through the Sustainable Tourism Plan La Gomera: Circular Island, which includes more than 18 actions, with an investment exceeding 3.3 million euros, within the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR), funded by Next Generation EU Recovery Funds, and with the collaboration of the Chamber of Commerce of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the six municipalities of the island.
