El Cabildo de La Palma invierte en mejorar el Vivero de Flora Autóctona y el Centro de Rehabilitación de Fauna Silvestre

The Minister of the Environment, Susa Armas, highlights the commitment of the government team to renew and expand these two key resources for this department

The Cabildo de La Palma will allocate more than half a million euros to actions at the Insular Native Flora Nursery and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. «Both measures have been recently approved by the Government Council and will allow the renewal and expansion of these infrastructures that are essential for the work of the Department of Environment,» explains the Area’s responsible, Susa Armas.

Specifically, €358,815.94 will be allocated to the works for the expansion and improvement of the Nursery facilities, whose main objective is to carry out beautification actions on the terraces and their accesses behind the existing greenhouse, as well as the improvement of these environments and the construction of new terraces for the maintenance and cultivation of species classified as endangered.

This action will involve landscaping works, stabilization of the terrain on the central platform of the existing terrace, and a visitable itinerary for observation and learning about the conservation of protected plant species. At the top of the nursery, works will be carried out to stabilize the terrain and implement and construct new terraces for the cultivation of protected species.

Improvement works and access to the different terraces will also be carried out by paving the accesses.

As for the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, the action will have an investment of €230,602.12, which will be used for the conditioning of the maintenance cages for injured or distressed wild fauna specimens, as well as the exteriors of these same facilities, the conditioning of the pool for the maintenance of sea turtles, and, above all, the construction of a necropsy room that will allow the development of all technical and scientific actions related to cetacean strandings on the island’s coasts.

All these actions are framed within the direct grant to the Insular Cabildo de La Palma for the prevention and mitigation of damages to biodiversity and natural heritage caused by volcanic eruptions in 2021, granted by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge through the Resolution of the State Secretary for the Environment, dated December 7, 2021.
