El Cabildo de La Palma aprueba estrategia para implementar la Agenda 2030 y los ODS

Sergio Rodríguez emphasizes the instrumentalization of «the path we want for the Island»

The Cabildo of La Palma reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the island, taking steps to establish a territory that allows for a more just, equitable, and sustainable future for all the citizens of the Island.

With the unanimous approval in the island’s Plenary of the Development Strategy of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals of the Insular Council of La Palma 2025 – 2030 and its Annexes, the Council continues its work driven by the Government group in the line of rational use of environmental resources.

The island’s president, Sergio Rodríguez, has highlighted that «the 2030 Agenda is a fundamental roadmap for the future of La Palma, combining reconstruction efforts to achieve a better and more sustainable territory compared to before September 2021.»

To this end, the president emphasizes that the Biosphere Reserve is leading the process in which they work closely with all sectors of society to achieve the SDGs and build a more prosperous, sustainable, and inclusive island.

In this sense, Sergio Rodríguez values the work carried out by all the island’s departments, with their heads at the forefront, as well as the coordination work carried out by the Biosphere Reserve.

The Council of La Palma, through the approval of this Strategy, sets itself the general objective of promoting a new development model for the island, which is more sustainable, cohesive, and in harmony with its natural environment as a fundamental pillar for the success of the 2030 Agenda.

This strategic framework aims to promote comprehensive sustainable development, aligned with the seventeen sustainable development goals (SDGs), taking into account the specific needs of the island’s population, its natural resources, and its vulnerability to phenomena such as climate change or volcanic activity.

The document includes principles such as promoting resilience, social equity, and economic sustainability, ensuring that the policies implemented are relevant and effective in the island context.

Sergio Rodríguez highlights that the Biosphere Reserve has been working for years on implementing programs and activities aimed at making the 2030 Agenda known and bringing the SDGs closer to the people of La Palma, with the aim of promoting a responsible and committed citizenship to sustainable development at both a local and global level.

Thus, with this document, the foundations are also laid for generating spaces for reflection on these new challenges, in connection with other social actors, spaces that foster the generation of critical thinking, the exchange of opinions, and work proposals.
