Nacho Baltasar’s Spanish hung on Friday in the fight for Lanzarote IQFoil after a partial podium on the third day, holding onto the fourth position in the provisional overall of Marina Rubicón before the marathon test.
The male and female fleets completed four races with a north-east wind above 20 knots and stirred up the sea on this third day. The first race was a trapeze, with men starting in the outer field, but the conditions were very unstable and running, so in the following three races, the head official of Resatas, Ewa Jodlowska, kept both fleets on the same upwind/downwind route.
In the male fleet, 20-year-old Italian Manolo Modena had an impressive performance, winning three out of the four races of the day and taking fourth place in the last one, which placed him in fifth overall. Mallorcan Nacho Baltasar added partial scores of 3-6-9-9 to hold onto fourth place and remain a contender for the medal race.
On the other hand, Spanish Bernat Tomàs has dropped two positions and is now in twentieth place. The breakage of his mast from his failure prevented him from competing in the last two races, resulting in two DNCs («did not compete») which became his two discards. Alicante’s Jorge Arrangue drops one position and is now in 23rd place.
Despite not having the best day, 21-year-old leader Johan Soe (den) maintains the top spot, keeping Nico Goyard (FR) in second place by 16 points. World champion Nicolò Renna (ITA) holds the third position, although he had a tough day with a bidding of 36 today.
In the female fleet, Emma Wilson (GBR) reclaimed the lead after winning two races. The bronze medalist in Paris 2024 is now five points ahead of Israeli Shahar Tibi, who had a more uneven day but remains second at a very close distance. Theresa Steinlein, a German representative in Paris 2024, took the third overall position.
