The second vice president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Gustavo Matos (PSOE), stated on Tuesday that he has «nothing to do with» businessman Mohamed Derbah — who is in pretrial detention for allegedly leading a drug trafficking network — and has «no relationship» with the police operation carried out in the south of Tenerife.
«No one believes this,» he emphasized in a long press conference held at the regional Chamber, where he questioned that the report from the Internal Affairs of the National Police is «taken out of context» and its publication in an «incomplete» way is an attempt to «tarnish» his public image.
Matos has announced that he will maintain both his position in the Parliament and in the executive committee of the PSOE in the Canary Islands, believing that his political career will not be affected by these events because «there is nothing punishable» and it would be «crazy» to consider it over when there are «others» who have been accused and convicted and have moved forward.
He indicated that he has not been asked to resign and has only received «messages of support and affection» from his colleagues and other political parties, while highlighting that he has been in constant contact with the Secretary of Organization, Santo Cerdán, and his counterpart in the islands, Nira Fierro.
