The Cabildo, through the program ‘Fuerteventura, beautiful by nature’, has completed the reconstruction, following traditional masonry techniques, of the two wells of the La Florida Hamlet and the installation of safety grilles to prevent falls into the void. This is a valuable action, as this architectural complex is part of the Historical Public Heritage of Fuerteventura.

The work has had the advice and support of the Security Department of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, led by Lolina Negrín, and the direct supervision of the Prevention, Firefighting and Rescue Service (SPEIS), as the original structures were at risk of collapse and collapse into their cavities. The workers of ‘Fuerteventura, beautiful by nature’ carried out the work secured with lifelines to prevent accidents from falling into the void.

The crews sent by the Cabildo, through its own medium of Territorial and Environmental Management and Planning (Gesplan), demolished these ruined structures and then rebuilt them following traditional stone wall techniques.

In addition to its recovery with architectural and ethnographic sensitivity, this intervention in the wells of La Florida had an important safety component. Both wells posed an evident danger to visitors approaching the hamlet, so safety grilles were incorporated that cover the openings and prevent falls but allow the interior to be viewed.

The next step in this assignment is the perimeter fencing of the entire settlement. It should be noted that the La Florida Hamlet is part of the Historical Public Heritage of the island. It is a historical complex of rural and utilitarian architecture that represents the customs and practices of the majoreros from the interior about 300 years ago.

Comprising a group of scattered traditional houses built with stone, lime, sand, and mud, some from the 18th century, and other ethnographic assets associated with agricultural and livestock exploitation, such as livestock dependencies, cisterns, small ponds, and gavias, as well as remains of a mill, this traditional majorero architectural complex has a high heritage value for the island.

Like other areas in the interior of the island, this group of traditional houses fell victim to the incursions of English pirates, who plundered and devastated fields and houses in their path.
