ARONA (TENERIFE), 31 (EUROPA PRESS)
The Mayor of Arona, Fátima Lemes (PP), admitted on Monday that there is «concern» among the residents of Los Cristianos regarding a possible expansion of the port but made it clear that no decision has been made.
In an open letter to the population, she points out that the technical report prepared by the College of Civil Engineers about the maritime connection between the ‘green islands’ and Tenerife is only a «technical analysis document» with various alternatives, so she believes that a dialogue based on «contrasted and rigorous information» should be fostered.
«Understanding the content of the report in depth will help enrich the debate and avoid interpretations that may generate confusion or unnecessary concern among the population,» the mayor states in the letter.
Lemes points out that the City Council does not have direct competences regarding port planning but remains «on alert» and with a «firm commitment» to act as «spokespersons» for the popular will.
«We share the concern about the current saturation situation in Los Cristianos and we will ensure that any future decision does not harm our quality of life. Therefore, we will continue to demand sustainable solutions based on technical criteria, but also social and environmental ones,» she points out.
The mayor insists that «only through truthful information and constructive exchange» can progress be made towards solutions that benefit all parties involved.
«We cannot fall into any type of confrontation but rather approach those who need to understand the reality in Los Cristianos,» she emphasizes.
