On November 20, 2025, in Santa Lucía de Tirajana, a moment of silence was observed in memory of all the victims of gender-based violence. The public and municipal representatives paid their respects to the 38 women, 1 young woman, and 3 minors who lost their lives in the past year due to gender-based violence and vicarious violence in Spain. Their names were solemnly read out at the Víctor Jara theater by employees of the Equality and Diversity department of the Santa Lucía de Tirajana City Council, marking the beginning of the Institutional Act commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
This year, the event was scheduled in the morning to allow students from the municipality to attend. Mayor Francisco García emphasized the concerning data from various studies that indicate the persistence of gender-based violence, microaggressions, and other forms of violence against women, especially among young people. He urged young women and students to not normalize violence, whether it be through controlling behavior, digital abuse invading privacy, dictating social circles, or regulating clothing choices, emphasizing the importance of speaking out against such actions.
Councilwoman for Equality and Diversity Olga Cáceres stressed the need for societal reflection on whether the current state of affairs is sustainable or if immediate measures are necessary. She addressed the youth of the municipality as the present and future agents of change, highlighting their pivotal role in implementing measures to combat violence. Cáceres also emphasized the impact of gender-based violence, noting that aside from the tragic loss of the 38 women and 3 minors mentioned earlier, 22 children were left motherless as a result of these acts.
Following the speeches by municipal representatives, the group ‘Faranduleras’ performed the play ‘Teatroterapia’, depicting scenarios of sexism and microaggressions involving characters of various ages. The audience and officials observed a minute of silence in honor of all the victims of gender-based violence.
