National Police officers have arrested a man as the alleged perpetrator of a robbery with violence and intimidation after mugging an elderly person who had just withdrawn money from an ATM in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The incident took place on July 10 when the now arrested individual spotted an octogenarian at an ATM making a cash withdrawal and then decided to follow them to the entrance of their home where, once inside, he assaulted them and stole the money, as reported by the National Police in a press release.
Several witnesses who saw the events unfold alerted the authorities and managed to detain the assailant until the officers arrived, who then proceeded to arrest the suspect and assist the victim. During a security pat-down, the officers found the stolen money amounting to over 300 euros, which was returned to its rightful owner.
After completing the police procedures, the detained individual was handed over to the competent judicial authority.
The Police emphasize that citizen collaboration was crucial in ensuring the apprehension of the thief and thwarting his intentions, and therefore, they thank and remind citizens that they can anonymously provide information, clues, or suspicions of criminal activities through the website www.policía.es under the section «Colabora.»
Lastly, they advise that, whenever possible, it is best to avoid using an ATM at night or in poorly lit areas, and to exercise caution when withdrawing money, as there may be individuals looking to distract you in order to steal your money.
They also recommend paying attention to any elements that may have been tampered with, and in case of any incidents, to contact on-duty police officers or call 091.
