Artesanos de Tenerife se reúnen en Feria de Artesanía en Garachico

The Cabildo de Tenerife and the Ayuntamiento de Garachico have inaugurated the Comarcal de Artesanía Fair in the municipality this Friday, which aims to promote identity and creativity, bringing together more than 40 artisans in the surroundings of Plaza de La Libertad and Glorieta de San Francisco until July 6, from 10:00 to 20:00.

Additionally, as specified by the institution in a press release, within the courtyard of the former convent of San Francisco, there will be an artisanal section with 16 exhibitors showcasing pastries, beekeeping, sauces, liquors, cheeses, incense, jams, among other typical gastronomic products from the Canary Islands.

The craft fair will also feature different gastronomic stalls from local collectives and associations showcasing typical Canarian cuisine. On Saturday, July 5, the day will begin at 10:00 with the opening of the artisanal exhibition.

At 12:00, the rondalla of the Mar y Lava Senior Association will perform. In the evening, at 20:00, there will be music and folklore by A. C. Ben-Gara, and the day will conclude with more music: La Cuartita at 21:00 and La Cernidera at 22:30.

The last day of the 43rd edition of the Garachico Craft Fair will also start at 10:00, followed by the performance of the San Andrés Apóstol Senior Association at 12:00.

At 19:30, this edition of the craft fair will close with the awards ceremony for the best traditional piece and the best contemporary piece.

### BASKETRY EXHIBITION

The Cabildo de Tenerife and the Ayuntamiento de Garachico are organizing a traditional Canarian basketry exhibition in the Hall of the Town Hall with the funds from the Museum of Ibero-American Craftsmanship of Tenerife (Mait). The exhibition ‘Weaving and Interlacing Vegetable Fibers’ can be visited from this Friday until July 6 from 9:30 to 14:00 at the Casa Palacio de los Marqueses de Adeje and Condes de la Gomera (Casa de Piedra).

The insular institution states that the exhibition is part of the promotional actions carried out by the Insular Craft Company.

«Basketry was traditionally a very important trade for the primary sector in the Canary Islands, and these itinerant exhibitions aim to bring the museum pieces closer to the general public. In 2008, we launched a program of itinerant exhibitions with the goal of promoting knowledge of popular art throughout the insular geography,» said Efraín Medina, Councilor for Employment and Education.

Currently, the Cabildo emphasizes that there are very few basket makers, which is why these exhibitions aim to help promote and spread awareness of this trade among society. These exhibitions are loaned to entities that request them, once it has been verified that they will have all the necessary security measures to ensure their proper presentation, for a period not exceeding twenty days.
