ARRECIFE (LANZAROTE), 9 (EUROPA PRESS)
La Guardia Civil investigated a woman residing in Madrid on May 26 for a crime of fraud, in the ‘son in trouble’ modality, deceiving a person from Lanzarote into believing she was his son in order to give her nearly 12,000 euros.
In a statement, the Benemérita explained that the investigation began in April when the victim reported the incident in which cybercriminals contacted him through an instant messaging application pretending to be his son.
In that message, the supposed son claimed to have lost his mobile phone and, for that reason, was using an unknown number. He then explained that he was going through an emergency situation that required an urgent transfer of a considerable sum of money.
Faced with the desperate situation he described, they induced the victim to act quickly, preventing him from reasoning what was happening and convincing him to transfer a significant amount of money to the cybercriminals, totaling almost 12,000 euros.
The victim later realized the scam when he found that his son was in perfect condition and that it was not him who had sent the messages.
In response to these events, the ‘Equipo@ Lanzarote’, specializing in cybercrime, initiated an investigation in collaboration with the Organic Unit of Judicial Police in Madrid and managed to identify and locate the alleged perpetrator of the crime, a Madrid resident.
The agents used advanced investigative techniques aimed at combating technological fraud on the internet, which is why the specialized team of the Guardia Civil quickly intervened.
The possibility of other individuals being involved in the crime is not ruled out, so the investigation continues to clarify all the details and prevent future similar cases, reminding the public of the importance of exercising caution with suspicious messages.
Finally, the Guardia Civil stated that the proceedings have been made available to the Duty Court of Arrecife.
