Albert Monteys en ‘Entre viñas y viñetas’ del Extra de Verano Tacoronte-Acentejo

The cartoonist Albert Monteys is the guest illustrator in a new edition of ‘Entre viñas y viñetas’, an initiative that establishes a pairing between the world of comics and oenology, and that is one of the most characteristic sections of the program ‘Extra de Verano Tacoronte-Acentejo en La Laguna’, an event dedicated to viticulture that takes place throughout the month of June.

The former director of the legendary magazine ‘El Jueves’ will sign copies of his works today, Thursday, and tomorrow, Friday, at Librería Lemus, from 18:00 to 20:00 hours, and on Friday evening, he will also participate in a dialogue with the specialist Manuel Darias starting at 20:15 hours. During the presentation, Albert Monteys already revealed the dedication of some of his books, with the participation of the Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez; the Councilor for Rural Development, Cristina Ledesma; the President of the Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Origin Tacoronte-Acentejo, José Manuel González; and the representative of Librería Lemus, Francisco González Lemus.

Cristina Ledesma pointed out that ‘Entre viñas y viñetas’ «has become an essential part of the programming of the Extra de Verano de Tacoronte-Acentejo. Viticultural culture reaches one of its highest expressions through the cartoons. This pairing with the world of comics is as original and authentic as our own wines and gastronomy.»

Albert Monteys thanked for the invitation to participate in this initiative, stating that he feels very comfortable in the wine-cartoon pairing, and he expressed his desire to add a new designation of origin to this experience. The cartoonist already participated in 2018 in the global volume ‘Vinómics’, graphic stories with a taste of good wine, alongside other national authors, creating an excellent pairing of wine and cartoons; a true tribute from the world of comics to the social drink par excellence.

«La Laguna once again becomes the regional center where the world of comics is accompanied by the best wines for a few days,» said José Manuel González, who recalled that this section has been running for 18 years, «committing to this pairing that merges the art of cartoons with the art of Tacoronte-Acentejo wine.»

Francisco Lemus was in charge of introducing the illustrator, who has had a long career in the world of cartoons. Albert Monteys won the Josep Toutain Award for Best New Author at the Barcelona Comic Fair in 1997. After publishing the comics ‘Mondo Lirondo’ with La Peñya and ‘Calavera lunar’ solo in the nineties, he landed in the magazine ‘El Jueves’, where he drew weekly until 2014, eventually becoming its director. He is the author of the series ‘Tato’ and ‘For you, who are young!’, the latter with Manel Fontdevila, in that magazine. He also published in the digital magazine ‘Orgullo y Satisfacción’ and in ‘Míster K.’, among others.

Currently, he is working on interesting original titles like ‘¡Universo!’ on Panel Syndicate, whose first volume, collected in print by Astiberri (2018), received the award for the best Spanish author work at the Barcelona Comic Fair 2019, as well as a nomination for the Eisner Awards in 2017 in the best digital comic category. In 2024, he released a second installment of this title. He also adapted to the world of cartoons, with a script by Ryan North, Kurt Vonnegut’s novel ‘Slaughterhouse-Five’, a literary icon of anti-war sentiment that remains relevant. Other notable works in his production are ‘The Albert Monteys Show’, ‘Edible Mysteries’, ’23 frames per second’, and ‘Carlitos Fax’.

Albert Monteys’ signature now joins the long list of cartoonists who have already visited the viticultural region of Tacoronte-Acentejo in the 18 years of this ingenious initiative, unique in the Spanish denominations of origin landscape, merging the art of wine with the art of comics.
