The National Police have arrested a 44-year-old Romanian man in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, who was the subject of an International Arrest Warrant (OID) issued by the authorities of the United Kingdom, for allegedly committing several sexual assault offenses against a minor member of his family, punishable by a maximum of 14 years in prison.
The arrest took place after on December 25, 2024, the agents initiated an investigation upon receiving communication from the Fugitive Group of the General Police Judicial Station about the OID issued by the British authorities, as reported by the National Police in a press release.
According to the arrest warrant, the fugitive was arrested on October 5, 2020, following a report filed by the minor’s father, who was 13 years old at the time, to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), informing the authorities of the sexual contacts the suspect had with the minor.
The fugitive, who denied the allegations, was released on bail but failed to appear at the trial scheduled for September 23, 2021, leading the authorities to issue an arrest warrant against him.
A police operation conducted by the Drug and Organized Crime Unit (UDYCO) of Las Palmas, with close collaboration from the Provincial Immigration and Borders Brigade, concluded on April 25, when the wanted individual was located, identified, and arrested in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Following the police procedures, the suspect was handed over to the competent judicial authority, who carried out the necessary steps to extradite the fugitive to the requesting authorities.
