Apoya el consumo local para salvarnos

The Government of the Canary Islands presented a new campaign on Thursday to promote and support the consumption of local products, under the slogan ‘Consume local or we’re screwed’, aiming to raise awareness among the population about the importance of choosing Canarian products and defending the archipelago’s primary sector.

The campaign will be launched today through the social media channels of the Ministry, GMR Canarias, and Abubukaka. The initiative, developed by the public company Gestión del Medio Rural de Canarias (GMR Canarias), was introduced by the Minister of the area, Narvay Quintero, the CEO of GMR Canarias, Juan Antonio Alonso, the director of the Canarian Institute of Quality Agri-food (ICCA), Luis Arráez Guadalupe, and the members of the theater company Abubukaka, who brought the campaign to life with their unique and provocative style.

«With this campaign, we promote a deep reflection on the consumption decisions we make every day and remind everyone that supporting local products is also supporting our land, our people, and our future,» emphasized Quintero.

The centerpiece of this promotional campaign is a video that, with a satirical tone and cinematic aesthetics, depicts local producers embarking on a symbolic journey «to the dumps,» symbolizing the abandonment of their businesses due to lack of support from the population.

DETAILS OF THE INITIATIVE

Through signs and directions like «turn right on the street, it’s cheaper at the big store» or «take the third exit on the roundabout, the mountain is dirty, people no longer plant anything,» the campaign aims to highlight the situation of agri-food industry professionals if the public does not support the consumption of local products.

The members of Abubukaka expressed their enthusiasm for being part of this groundbreaking production. «We loved working on this project and believe it will spark debate, which is what is truly needed. There are always the same criticisms, that local products are more expensive, not worth it, etc. In this video, we included those voices to make people reflect on the true value of our products,» explained Carlos Pedrós.

«The video combines comedy and reflection, which is part of our DNA. We wanted the audience to laugh but also ask questions and think about the consequences of their purchasing decisions,» added Pedrós.

SALON GOURMETS FAIR

The Ministry also revealed details about the Government of the Canary Islands’ participation in the 38th edition of the International Fair of Quality Food and Beverages ‘Salon Gourmets,’ taking place in Madrid from April 7 to 10, as part of the Executive’s local product promotion initiatives.

The councils and the regional government have organized over thirty activities at this exhibition space, including commented tastings of various PDO products that showcase the tradition of Canarian wines and their pairing with cheeses and other delicacies, as well as workshops on tropical fruits, chocolates, vermouth, gins, butter, and palm syrups.

Furthermore, on April 7, under the brand Volcanic Xperience, the Canarian Government will host a series of presentations, culinary demonstrations, and tastings at the main stage of the fair, highlighting the richness and uniqueness of the archipelago’s seafood products and wines.
