The Socialist Parliamentary Group accused the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, on Wednesday of «once again putting» the interests of the Popular Party (PP) ahead of those of the Canary Islands by the abandonment of the Minister of Finance of the Government of the Canary Islands, Matilde Asián (PP), from the Fiscal and Financial Policy Council (CPFF) along with the rest of the advisors from the autonomous communities governed by the PP.
The meeting was convened to negotiate the proposal for the condonation of 50% of the debt of the autonomous communities presented by the Spanish Government, which, in the case of the islands, would amount to 3,259 million euros, representing 50% of the total debt of the autonomous community, which was estimated at 6,158 million euros as of December 31, 2023, as detailed by the Socialists in a note.
In this sense, they denounce that between the Canary Islands and Feijóo in the condonation of 50% of the debt, «Clavijo chooses to go against the Canary Islands.»
The Socialist Group emphasizes that the Minister of Finance of the Government of the Canary Islands, Matilde Asián, represented the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands in the organ meeting and abandoned it «against the general interest of the Canary Islands following the political strategy of the PP of Mr. Feijóo, who, under the watchful eye of Mrs. Ayuso, insists on the punishment to which he subjects the islands after voting against the modification of Article 35 of the Organic Law on Foreigners that would allow a response to the migratory problem arising from the arrival of unaccompanied foreign minors.»
From the Socialist Group, on the other hand, they value the proposal formulated by the Ministry of Finance of the Government of Spain.
«It is good for the country as a whole and very good for the Canary Islands, and for this reason, we not only censure that the Popular Party punishes the islands through the Minister of Finance but also that the President of the Canary Islands tolerates it,» they detail.
For the Socialists, it is «difficult to understand» why they oppose the elimination of half of a debt, just as it would be incomprehensible for a family to reject a reduction of half of their mortgage.
In that line, they clarify that this is a «further step» to free up resources previously allocated to debt repayment and to be able to dedicate them to public services, benefiting the citizens of the Canary Islands.
For the PSOE, Clavijo demonstrates «once again» that his only project «is power» and not the defense of the interests of the Canary Islands. «He continues to fall short of the needs of the islands,» they indicate.
