Guardia Civil agents, under the functional dependence of the Maritime Customs of the Tax Agency in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, have arrested three people, two men and one woman, for a drug trafficking offense involving 72 kilos of cocaine. They were transporting 50 kilos on a vessel dedicated to supplying merchant ships and anchored in the Port of Las Palmas, while the other 22 kilos were hidden in the hull of one of the ships they had provided services to.
The arrests took place during an inspection carried out by Civil Guard officers of the Provincial Maritime Service on a vessel dedicated to providing service and supplies to ships anchoring in the Port of Las Palmas. The vessel was under suspicion for possible ties to illicit activities, as reported by the Civil Guard in a press release.
During the inspection, the agents found a large suitcase containing two bundles with various packages of cocaine, leading them to conduct a more thorough search of the vessel, where they found various diving equipment in the hold of the vessel.
There were three crew members on the vessel: the captain, a sailor, and a non-enrolled crew member.
Faced with the material found, agents of the Civil Guard’s GEAS conducted another inspection of the ship where the crew of the supply vessel allegedly obtained the narcotic substance. They found a black bundle in the sea water intake grilles containing packages of cocaine, bringing the total seized to 72 kilos of cocaine.
The detainees, along with the proceedings initiated, were handed over to the Court of Instruction Number 2 of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with the decision to remand them in provisional custody.
