Reunión para mejorar instalaciones de cofradías en Fuerteventura
The Director General of Fisheries and the President of the island corporation met today with representatives of the three fishermen’s guilds on the island to discuss the current situation of the sector in this campaign, as well as the improvement works of the fishing infrastructures
The Director General
of Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Esteban Reyes, and the President of the Cabildo
of Fuerteventura, Lola García, held meetings today Thursday, July 10, with the three fishermen’s guilds on the island
-Corralejo, Gran Tarajal, and Morro Jable- to address the needs of
the sector and plan the implementation of a series of improvement actions in their
facilities. These meetings also involved representatives from the
town councils of La Oliva, Tuineje, and Pájara, municipalities where these entities are located.
In this regard,
Reyes emphasized «the importance of inter-administrative collaboration and direct interaction with fishermen’s guilds to firsthand understand the demands of the professionals in this sector and be able to offer them effective support, through infrastructure improvement actions or other additional measures, that contribute to the maintenance and development of fishing activity in the Canary Islands».
On her part, Lola
García highlighted that «from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, we always stand on the side of traditional Majorero fishing professionals. That is why these coordination meetings between administrations and guilds are key, to address demands in terms of infrastructure, in a way that favors a traditional practice that is, also, one of the most rooted economic activities in Fuerteventura».
In the first
meeting of the day, with representatives from the Fishermen’s Guild of
Corralejo, the implementation of asphalt works in the fishing area of El Cotillo was planned, as well as checking the condition of the docks in this port area, which recently underwent improvement actions carried out by the General Directorate of Fisheries and Canarian Ports.
Subsequently, in the
meeting with the Fishermen’s Guild of Gran Tarajal, an agreement was reached to expand
the main warehouse of this entity’s headquarters to accommodate the fish delivery trucks and, in this way, free up a commercialization area in the facilities, an action that will be carried out by the Canarian Government.
Finally, together with
the members of the Fishermen’s Guild of Morro Jable, they verified the
result of the roofing works, carried out by the regional government in
collaboration with the Pájara City Council, in a fish transit area, to facilitate the daily tasks of the fishermen and their development in a more comfortable way, as well as the improvements of the electrical installation carried out.
In addition to the
corresponding actions on the infrastructures of each guild, other topics of interest for the sector on the island were discussed during the day, such as the state of catches in the current campaign compared to the previous one, both in the case of tuna and other species; the situation of shipowners and sailors; or the Ports transfer agreement, among other matters.
