La conectividad aérea indirecta de Binter impulsa el tráfico hacia La Palma
The volume of connecting passengers on Binter has increased from 15,000 in 2023 to almost 44,000 in 2024, representing an increase of nearly 200% in traffic, thanks to the free inter-island connections with its national and international routes from Gran Canaria and Tenerife
The Cabildo de La Palma celebrates the data of indirect air traffic recorded in 2024, which reflects the improvement in air connectivity with the island. The area’s responsible highlights that the volume of connections has almost tripled, going from 15,000 passengers in 2023 to almost 44,000 in 2024, representing an annual increase of 200% in traffic.
Indirect traffic refers to passengers who reach their final destination through a stopover at another airport instead of a direct flight. In the case of La Palma, it refers to travelers who access the island through connections at airports such as Tenerife Norte or Gran Canaria, thanks to Binter’s free inter-island connections with its national and international routes.
President Sergio Rodríguez emphasizes that «this increase in indirect passenger traffic reflects not only the effort and commitment of the Cabildo to promote La Palma as an accessible and attractive destination but also the joint work with airlines, tour operators, and regional authorities. The smooth connection with Madrid, the reinforcement of national and international routes, and the expansion of flight network through Tenerife Norte are key elements to ensure that more visitors choose our island as their vacation spot.»
According to Tourism Councilor Raquel Rebollo, «the reinforcement of connections with Madrid by Binter has been crucial in this growth.» In addition, destinations in the northern part of the peninsula, such as Galicia and Asturias, continue to lead the indirect traffic to La Palma, while others like Granada have experienced significant growth.»
Furthermore, Binter’s growth in national and international connectivity from Tenerife Norte has significantly improved due to the addition of new routes and the increase in frequencies on existing routes. «This reinforcement will lead to a 7.5% increase in weekly connection options, reaching 2,715 possible connections from La Palma to Binter’s destination network, all with the connecting leg at zero cost,» she points out. Additionally, almost 40% of these connection slots are bound for Madrid.
Regarding the promotion of indirect traffic for the upcoming year, the councilor has announced that «the Cabildo will continue working hand in hand with Binter in 2025 to further boost the arrival of visitors through indirect connections, building on the record figures of 2024.» This collaboration will focus on promoting La Palma in strategic destinations that facilitate connectivity via Tenerife Norte and Gran Canaria, such as Valencia, San Sebastián, Pamplona, A Coruña, Asturias, Ponta Delgada, Vigo, and Zaragoza, among others.
One of the key aspects of the close collaboration with Binter aims to channel the arrival of international tourists and tour operations through Tenerife Sur Airport. For this purpose, «we have made available 6,000 seats under special conditions and are in contact with tour operators to promote these fares and encourage the arrival of international tourists through Tenerife Sur, highlighting the importance of Binter’s direct route between La Palma and this airport,» explains the councilor. In this regard, the Cabildo will enhance communication with tour operators to boost bookings.
«We will continue to advance in improving air connectivity and promoting La Palma as a tourist destination, with the aim of consolidating this growth and harnessing the great potential that indirect traffic represents,» concludes Rebollo.
