Jornadas sobre fertilización orgánica en La Laguna

COAG Canarias and the Rural Development Department of the La Laguna City Council have scheduled the ‘Organic Fertilization Conference’ for July 2nd, aiming to promote sustainable use of agricultural soils with the participation of professionals, technicians, and researchers in the agricultural sector.

The event, part of the project ‘Establishing a Model Agroecology Reference,’ will take place at the Crystal Room of the former Santo Domingo convent from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Admission to the venue is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cristina Ledesma, the Rural Development Councilor of the La Laguna City Council, explained, «The main purpose of these conferences is to delve into specific aspects such as the benefits of proper fertilization, mainly organic and using locally sourced inputs. It is important to note that through these practices, soil health is improved, water is saved, and production costs are reduced.»

Furthermore, the councilor emphasized, «This initiative will focus on local success stories, practical applications of this agroecological model, and an interesting exchange of ideas from different backgrounds offering their unique perspectives on the future of this professional activity.»

The conference’s schedule will kick off with the official event presentation at 4:30 pm, followed by the first presentation on ‘Current Trends in Biofertilization’ by Alexandra Díez from the University of Ávila at 5:15 pm. At 5:15 pm, Federico Salvador Laich, a scientific collaborator in agricultural microbiology at ICIA, will discuss ‘Soil Microorganisms and Organic Matter: a key interaction for soil health.’

Just before the break, Juan Ramón Hernández, a researcher at MAIMA (Applied Microbiology to Industry and Environment) at the University of La Laguna, will present ‘Soil Microorganisms in the Canary Islands.’

At 6:30 pm, the event will continue with a talk by Javier López, a technical representative from COPLACA, on ‘Organic Matter in Banana Plantations.’ Finally, there will be a roundtable discussion on visions and expectations of organic matter in the Canary Islands, with the participation of Orlando Cabrera (Compost Majorero), Rafael Zárate (ATH Bioenergy), and Milagros Barroso (technical engineer and composter).
