Thursday, June 26, 2025.-
During this school year, the Cabildo de Fuerteventura has brought the teaching of Canarian traditional sports and games to around 1,300 students from all over the island. This was made possible thanks to the ‘Don’t Forget Our Roots’ program of the Sports Department, led by Luis González, dedicated to teaching practices such as the Canarian stick game (stick and can), the Canarian boules, billiards, tangana, the shepherd’s jump, handball, and pina.
‘Don’t Forget Our Roots’ was carried out throughout the 2024/2025 school year in the 11 secondary schools on the island. A total of 53 courses of 4th ESO (15 and 16 years old) participants, who in their Physical Education classes completed two weeks in the initiation to the practice of these activities with 2 weekly sessions of 1 hour, taught by the specialist technicians of the Cabildo’s Sports Department, with the involvement of the teaching staff in each of the participating schools.
As a novelty in this school year, the program included virtual reality glasses as an additional resource, especially aimed at introducing students with functional diversity to activities such as the shepherd’s jump or stick game. An entertaining, educational, and inclusive experience, thanks to the collaboration of the Cabildo’s Department of New Technologies, led by Carmen Alonso.
Luis González, head of the Cabildo’s Sports Department, who promotes and coordinates this initiative, highlighted the importance of maintaining a fundamental program «that makes Fuerteventura a different and special island in terms of the conservation and dissemination of our sports traditions. After twenty-five years of operation, the activities of ‘Don’t Forget Our Roots’ are fully consolidated and are a model initiative in the Canary Islands that every year are awaited and demanded by educational centers throughout the island».
González added that «from this institution, we promote the ‘Don’t Forget Our Roots’ Program with the idea that these types of activities convey social, educational, and health values, and promote social integration, improvement of student education, and the dissemination, rescue, and conservation of our traditional Canarian games and sports.» For all this, «it is necessary to thank the essential and indispensable collaboration and involvement of educational centers and their teaching staff to continue promoting sports as an integrating element of our culture».
The specialist technicians have taught their lessons at the following centers: I.E.S. Jandía, IES. La Oliva, IES. Vigán, CPEIPS. Sagrado Corazón, IES. Puerto del Rosario, IES. Corralejo, IES. San Diego de Alcalá, CEO. Antigua, IES. Santo Tomás de Aquino, IES. Puerto Cabras Rafael Báez, and IES. Gran Tarajal.
Then, those students interested in continuing to practice traditional games and sports or receiving a more extensive training can go to or contact one of the municipal sports schools or clubs on the island that, in collaboration with the Cabildo, remain active outside of school hours.
