The Chief of the Defense Staff (JEMAD), Teodoro Esteban López Calderón, has assessed this Wednesday that the current level of tension at a geopolitical level «demands» preparation «to react» and above all «try» to ensure that the state of peace that is currently being experienced «is not altered,» after the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced the investment plan of 10.471 million to reach 2% of GDP in Defense.
«I understand that security is costly, but it cannot be taken for granted, it must be worked on. And indeed, the work to achieve it, the level of security that all Spaniards and our allies deserve, obviously has a cost,» Jemad pointed out when asked about this issue at an event in Tenerife.
In this sense, he has assessed as «evident» that the current geopolitical situation – around which there is «a lot of tension,» accompanied by «almost permanent confrontation,» as well as «hybrid threats, which arise daily with unconventional attacks,» in relation to cyber attacks – demands «that we have to prepare to react and above all try to ensure that the state of peace we live in is not altered.»
