Campaña de limpieza intensiva en caminos de Arrecife

During the cleaning operations, coordinated by the Landscape and Employment Areas, trucks and other heavy machinery are involved, as well as around twenty workers from the ‘Caring for Lanzarote and La Graciosa’ program.

The Cabildo de Lanzarote is carrying out an intensive cleaning campaign these days on the roads in the surroundings of Arrecife, specifically in the neighborhoods of Maneje and Argana, removing more than 600 tons of waste, including utensils, rubble, and mainly plastics.

In the cleaning tasks, which have been coordinated by the Landscape and Employment Areas of the Cabildo, led by Samuel Martín and Jesús Machín Tavío, respectively, a specialized company with trucks and other heavy machinery is participating, along with around twenty workers from the ‘Caring for Lanzarote and La Graciosa’ Employment Program.

«After several complaints from residents, the Cabildo de Lanzarote listens and acts,» said President Oswaldo Betancort, after visiting the area and checking the state of the road following the removal of tons of garbage and rubble by around thirty trucks. Betancort also appeals to «the responsibility of citizens to keep the island clean, caring for and respecting the environment, and avoiding the proliferation of illegal dumps.»

In the same vein, the Councilor of Landscape and Environment, Samuel Martín, emphasized the need for citizen collaboration to preserve these spaces. «At the Cabildo, we are making a significant effort to improve the cleanliness and maintenance of our rural and urban areas. However, we need the involvement of citizens for these improvements to be sustainable over time,» Martín said.

On the other hand, the Employment Councilor, Jesús Machín, explains that this cleaning and waste collection action is part of the program, promoted by the Cabildo, ‘Caring for Lanzarote and La Graciosa’, which has involved an investment of 12.5 million euros thanks to FDCAN funds.

«This program is divided into eight work packages, covering everything from maintenance, cleaning, and waste removal to the improvement and beautification of different areas of the island, such as coastal areas, public spaces, and rural environments, also achieving the hiring of 158 unemployed people on the island,» detailed the councilor.

Fines of up to 30,000 euros

The Cabildo de Lanzarote is calling on the population to help keep the areas where action has been taken clean, avoiding the proliferation of new dumps. It is also reported that fines can reach up to 30,000 euros.

In this regard, the existence of the Cabildo’s clean points located in Arrecife, Playa Honda, Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise, and Playa Blanca is recalled for waste disposal, with hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays. In addition, municipalities also offer a free service for the collection of utensils.
