The 24th International Film Festival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has announced its winners this Saturday, awarding the Lady Harimaguada to the American documentary ‘Seeds’ by Brittany Shyne.
Meanwhile, the Silver Lady Harimaguada went to the Turkish film One of Those Days When Hemme Dies; the Best Performance award to the lead actor of Yunan, Georges Khabbaz; the Best Short Film Award to Audio y el Caimán; the Banda Aparte Award to Archipelago of Earthen Bones-To Bunya, and the notable Audience and CIMA awards to Two Women and Seeds, respectively.
According to the city council, the Official Jury, in awarding the Lady Harimaguada de Oro, coincided with the one that a few months ago, at Sundance, awarded the Best Documentary prize to ‘Seeds’.
This particular portrayal of the lives of black farmers and their observations and reflections on land ownership won the favor of the members unanimously.
In the announcement of the winners, the jury states that «it is a visually striking and deeply moving film that pays homage to generations of black farmers in the Southern United States.»
«With its poetic black-and-white cinematography and deep sense of place, the film tells a story of resilience, heritage, and silent resistance in our times. A formally rigorous and bold film, where the filmmaker’s approach provides tenderness and strength, turning this documentary into a lasting cinematic work,» they argued.
