Primeras Jornadas de San Isidro Labrador en Lanzarote
The initiative will include guided tours, professional meetings, and a special recognition for young farmers and breeders on the island.
Oswaldo Betancort: «It is essential for young people to understand the real value of agriculture and livestock, not only as professional opportunities but also as part of our collective identity.»
The Cabildo de Lanzarote, through the Agriculture and Livestock Area, will celebrate the first San Isidro Labrador Days from May 14 to 16, an event that aims to strengthen the visibility and recognition of the primary sector on the island. With a full program of activities, the island institution reaffirms its commitment to promoting agriculture and livestock as essential drivers for the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
The President of the Cabildo and Councilor of Agriculture and Livestock, Oswaldo Betancort, has emphasized the importance of this initiative. «These days are a tribute to all those who work every day to keep our countryside alive and, at the same time, a clear message that the future of Lanzarote depends on supporting and strengthening our primary sector and generational turnover. Agriculture and livestock not only create local employment and wealth but also contribute to protecting our landscape, reducing external dependence, and preserving our most deeply rooted traditions.»
The program will kick off on May 14 and 15 with guided tours of the Insular Agricultural Service, aimed at school groups in 3rd and 4th of ESO, with the aim of getting to know the facilities of the Agricultural Experimental Farm and introducing students to the different training cycles in the agriculture branch offered at IES Teguise and CIFP Zonzamas. This initiative has a clear educational component and aims to spark early vocations, promoting the much-needed generational turnover in the sector.
The highlight of the event will be on May 16 with a grand Meeting of Producers, bringing together agricultural and livestock sector professionals at the Agricultural Experimental Farm to promote cooperation, association, and the creation of collaboration networks. During the event, members of the Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty Commission of the Canary Islands Parliament, led by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries of the regional government, Narvay Quintero, will give special recognition to young people who have joined the registry of Priority Agricultural Farms in the Canary Islands in recent years, thus committing to a professional career in agriculture and livestock on our island.
The Meeting of Producers will conclude with a fraternal gathering where a tasting of local products will be offered, showcasing the effort and quality of the work of the island’s producers. Interested producers can register for the event through the following link:
These days are part of the global strategy of the Cabildo de Lanzarote to strengthen the competitiveness of the primary sector through training, promotion, and dissemination programs. The institution also works on creating spaces that allow bringing knowledge and value of agriculture and livestock to the whole society, thus contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.
The president concluded that «this is a strategic sector for the economic diversification of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. Our commitment is to continue betting on policies that strengthen it and place it where it deserves, not only as an economic engine but also as a guarantor of sustainability and the preservation of our territory.»
