The film ‘Mariposas negras’, by the Tenerife-born David Baute, was recognized on Saturday night as Best Film at the 8th Quirino Awards for Ibero-American Animation, awards created to highlight the animated production of this region composed of 23 countries. Works from Spain, Brazil, and Uruguay were recognized in the three main categories of these awards.
On the other hand, the Brazilian film «Irmão do Jorel» received the award for Best Series, and «Los carpinchos,» by Uruguayan director Alfredo Soderguit, won the award for Best Short Film, as reported by the Tenerife Island Council, the main sponsor of the event through Tourism of Tenerife, in a press release.
The awards ceremony took place at the Teatro Leal in La Laguna, in a ceremony that was broadcast online. It was attended by the Vice President and Tourism Councillor of the Island Corporation, Lope Afonso, and the CEO of Tourism of Tenerife, Dimple Melwani, among others.
RECOGNITIONS
With his experience in documentary filmmaking, Tenerife director David Baute made his animation debut with «Mariposas negras,» a feature film about three women from very different parts of the world who are forced to migrate to survive as a result of the climate crisis. Thus, «Éxodo climático,» a documentary by the director released in 2020, is the starting point of this work that has been recognized at the Goya and Platino Awards, among others.
Written by the director alongside Yaiza Berrocal, the Best Film at the Quirino Awards is a production by the Spanish companies Ikiru Films and Tinglado Film – a production company based in Tenerife – along with the Panamanian company Anangu Grup.
After receiving the Quirino Award for Best Series in 2019, the Brazilian series «Irmão do Jorel» was once again recognized in this category for its fifth season. Created by Juliano Enrico and produced by the carioca Copa Studio in collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery, the series follows an extremely creative boy who begins to face the changes of preadolescence in the shadow of his older brother Jorel’s popularity.
In «Los carpinchos,» winner of the Quirino Award for Best Short Film, Uruguayan writer and director Alfredo Soderguit speaks about prejudice and friendship through a story about a family of capybaras forced to leave their habitat because of hunters. The work is an adaptation of the homonymous book written and illustrated by the director, known in the world of animation for «Anina» (2013) and the series «Dos pajaritos,» a finalist at the Quirino Awards in 2022.
The award for Best School Short Film went to «Adiós» by José Prats, a Spanish director graduated from the National Film and Television School in England, while in the Best Animated Music Video category, the award went to «My Way,» a production by the Argentine company Rudo Company directed by Jesica Bianchi for the band Siamés. Finally, the award for Best Commissioned Animation went to the Brazilian film «47,» directed by Paulo Garcia and Natalia Gouvea and produced by Zombie Studio, a work that also received the award for Best Visual Development.
The list of winners was completed with the award for Best Video Game Animation, given to «Neva» (Nomada Studio, Spain), and the technical awards for Best Animation Design for the short film «Buffet Paraíso,» directed by Santi Amézqueta and Héctor Zafra (Spain, France), and Best Sound Design and Original Music, awarded to the short film «Gilbert» by Alejandro Salueña García, Arturo Lacal Ruiz, and Jordi Jiménez Xiberta (Spain).

The 26 finalist works were selected from 263 submissions, 10 percent more than the previous year.
The Island Council highlights that over its eight editions, the Quirino Awards have contributed to building a common space for animation in the Ibero-American region, positioning its headquarters, the island of Tenerife, as a reference and meeting point for the sector.
TENERIFE, A NEW LABORATORY FOR ‘IBERO-AMERICAN ANIMATION’
During the gala, the Vice President of the Tenerife Island Council and Councillor for Tourism, External Action, and Institutional Relations, Lope Afonso, announced the launch of Quirino Lab, a training and debate space that will take place in November 2025.
«We aim to shed light on the issues that concern Ibero-American executive producers the most. After a process of analysis and listening to the sector, Tenerife will host the evolution of the original concept of the Quirino Residence,» he added.
As clarified by the island’s Vice President, the project incorporates the promotion of collective work and integrates the contributions that have emerged from the Futures Laboratory held at this edition of Quirino.
This new space, explained by the corporation, has the support of the Island Council through Tourism of Tenerife and the Tenerife Film Commission, and more registration details will be announced this June at the Annecy Animation Festival.
The Awards were named in honor of Quirino Cristiani, the creator of the first animated feature film in history: an Argentine production titled «El apóstol» (1917) that used 58,000 hand-drawn frames and was shot on 35 mm film.
Since its first edition in 2018, 1,992 works have been submitted to these awards, positioning its headquarters, Tenerife, as a reference and meeting point for Ibero-American animation.
