La Laguna modifica el PGO para crear nueva avenida en Bocatuerta y solucionar problemas de seguridad vial
The City Council of La Laguna has recently approved authorizing the expenditure to the Urban Planning Management for the specific modification of the General Urban Plan (PGO) in the area around Bocatuerta street, an essential preliminary action to promote the construction project of a new avenue that solves the security and mobility issues present in the current road, connecting San Miguel de Geneto and San Bartolomé de Geneto.
The autonomous body will be responsible for hiring the necessary technical assistance service to draft this modification, which is planned to be carried out now instead of waiting for the new PGO to avoid further delays. This drafting, which will start with a citizen participation process and undergo environmental assessment, will take as its starting point the proposal studied with the neighborhood committee, which involves creating a new road in the vicinity.
This action aligns with the content of the motion approved unanimously in a recent City Council Plenary session, a necessary agreement to start this PGO modification. «And, as promised, we have not stopped working on the file and have already taken the next step. We hope that very soon, we can have a new road, suitable for the needs of the residents, and that puts an end to the pedestrian safety issues in the area,» emphasized the mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez.
In this regard, the Councilor for Territorial Planning and managing director of the Urban Planning Management, Adolfo Cordobés, recalled that «Bocatuerta has been a historical problem, for which various initiatives were proposed without reaching agreements. After several technical meetings and discussions with the neighborhood platform, we have reached a consensus proposal that includes the construction of a new two-way road, with sidewalks and respective services.»
This new avenue would start from the TF-2 roundabout, crossing the road to San Bartolomé de Geneto and running, in a straight line and almost parallel to the current Bocatuerta street, through a sparsely urbanized area. It would have two roundabouts, one of them at the connection with TF-263, and would allow connecting streets like La Curvilla, Atacaite, La Cuestilla, El Millero, or La Calandria, which currently end in this area.
However, this solution required a modification of the municipal planning, so after technical and legal assessment and as a result of continuous work with the neighborhood collective, it was decided to address it through this specific modification of the PGO, a measure supported by the municipal Plenary.
The drafting deadlines, which include extensive citizen participation processes, will be established in the bidding documents for the drafting service, which are already being worked on. Once this modification is approved and has a favorable environmental assessment, the next steps for the physical execution of the project will be taken.
High Traffic Volume
Bocatuerta street, about 600 meters long, runs through an urbanized area and handles a high volume of traffic, connecting to the commercial area, TF-2, and Echeyde II school. This development has led to the old road not meeting the minimum width required for two-way traffic and lacking sidewalks, with no possibility of expanding its surface.
To ensure the safety of vehicles and pedestrians, a few years ago the option of turning it into a one-way street was considered. However, this proposal was strongly rejected at the citizen assembly convened by the neighborhood associations Princesa Iraya and Moral, from which emerged the Pro-Alternative Bocatuerta Commission, whose objective has been to analyze and propose alternatives to the City Council.
