Las Palmas de Gran Canaria celebrated this Sunday the fourth edition of the Carrera de la Mujer de Gran Canaria Central Lechera Asturiana, the first of the nine national circuit events, with a record participation of 4,000 women, with French Anaïs Frappé as the winner.
The French athlete stopped the clock at 18:52, crossing the finish line ahead of Elisa Guadalupe, the second-place finisher, by almost a minute (19:44). Solange Vadillo was the third runner to finish with a time of 20:02, while Cristina Hernández and Marieke Broeren were fourth and fifth, respectively.
The route was five kilometers, starting from Plaza de Canarias and finishing at Auditorio Alfredo Kraus after going through the Las Canteras promenade. The event had the support of the Gran Canaria Island Council, through the Insular Sports Institute, as well as the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council and the Las Palmas Port Authority.
More than 100 refugee women from CEAR and ACNUR also participated. The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, continues to support the promotion of the Women’s Race so that more refugee women and girls, asylum seekers, and stateless individuals can participate, thanking the organizers for providing free access. For these girls and women forced to flee from wars, violence, or persecution, sports are a fundamental tool for their physical and mental well-being and for strengthening their integration into the host society.
A tribute to Canarian female wrestling was paid at the starting line by presenting a plaque to Raquel Perdomo Peña, one of the founders of MELL (Women in Wrestling), a collective created in 2016 to promote women’s wrestling in the Canary Islands.
In 2025, the goal of the Women’s Race will continue to be to promote running and aerobic exercise among women of all ages, fight against cancer, raise funds for research, raise awareness about the importance of early prevention, as well as combat gender-based violence and the social and educational inequalities that women face in all areas.
At the end of the circuit, a donation of 90,000 euros will be made to the Spanish Association Against Cancer, as well as donations of 1,000 euros to Wanawake Mujer, which fights against female genital mutilation and other forms of violence against women; GEICAM Foundation, leaders in breast cancer research; and Clara Campoamor Association, which defends women’s rights in all areas.
The #laMquefalta movement, launched by the Daiichi Sankyo/AstraZeneca Alliance and the Spanish Metastatic Breast Cancer Association (ACMM), calls on citizens, companies, and institutions to raise awareness about the metastatic stage of breast cancer and educate society about this disease.
