Two out of the sixteen selected scripts are located in the territory of Fuerteventura, with ideas proposed by two prominent and award-winning screenwriters

Fuerteventura is the starting point for the 2025 edition of IsLABentura Canarias, the international laboratory responsible for selecting the best ideas for writing scripts for films and TV related to the islands. The first meeting with the organization and the prestigious team of experts begins in the capital of Fuerteventura, from where each one will move, throughout today, to the territory where their story is located to gather specific documentation to shape that future movie or series. Organized by the Government of the Canary Islands, through Canary Islands Film, the lab also has the crucial collaboration of the island councils.

The details of this edition were presented today by the Director General of Cultural Innovation and Creative Industries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Cristóbal de la Rosa, accompanied by the President of the Fuerteventura Island Council, Lola García; the councilor of Fuerteventura Film Commission, Nereida Calero; and the director of IsLABentura Canarias, Maria José Manso.

IsLABentura Canarias 2025 faces its fourth edition in a year where it has increased to sixteen coveted spots in the lab, two more than in previous editions, also accommodating scripts for animated films, in addition to seven for feature films and another seven for TV series, both fiction. There will be two scripts from each island, except for El Hierro and Lanzarote, which will have three. Among the sixteen selected, seven are from the Canary Islands.

After this initial meeting, they will have six months to submit the final script, supported by the advisory team. But before that, and after their time in Fuerteventura, they will spend three days on the islands where their story takes place, returning to the capital of Fuerteventura on Friday, the 25th, for a training session. There will be workshops on ‘The Inevitable Pitch’, led by Josep Gatell, and ‘Being a Showrunner: When and Why’, with Javier Olivares (writer of ‘El Ministerio del Tiempo’). It is worth noting that filmmakers and screenwriters from any island can register for free at www.islabenturacanarias.es.

From there, the work will continue online, coming together in July in Gran Canaria for a training session, and in October in La Palma for the final phase, as that is the month when they must present their respective scripts to local, national, and international production companies invited by the Government of the Canary Islands.

Stories by Islands

From Fuerteventura, there is an idea for a feature film titled ‘Island of Wolves’, by Yaiza Berrocal (screenwriter of ‘Black Butterflies’, which just won the Goya for Best Animated Film), a thriller-drama of suspense about soldiers who arrive on the island; and the series, ‘Siempreviva’, by Gracia Solera (screenwriter of the most-watched documentary in 2024, ‘Topuria: Matador’), which presents a unique roadmovie about a family that earns a living by doing post-mortem portraits. It is worth noting that the award-winning scripts in the 2024 edition were from Fuerteventura, the feature film ‘A Victorian Lady in Tindaya’ by Esther Fernández; and the series ‘Dinamita’, by Daute Campos and Sara Molina.

From Tenerife, there is the feature film ‘April is Young’, by Nacho Peña, which deals with existentialism, the midlife crisis; and the series ‘Break a Leg’, by Raquel Trujillo, a fun and comedic story about an amateur theater company in Tenerife.

From Gran Canaria, the feature film ‘Days of July’, by Pablo Fajardo, set in Las Palmas in the days leading up to the civil war outbreak; and the series ‘8 Islands
