El MUNA (Tenerife) expone ‘La mar de plástico’ hasta agosto

The Museo de Naturaleza y Arqueología de Tenerife (MUNA), part of the Cabildo de Tenerife, is focusing on marine pollution caused by plastics with the temporary exhibition ‘La mar de plástico’, which will be available for viewing until August 3 during the museum’s regular hours.

The presentation event, held this Tuesday, was attended by the Councilor of Culture and Museums of Tenerife, José Carlos Acha; the director of the Museo de Ciencias Naturales (MUNA), Fátima Hernández; Samuel Cabrera, from SoGoodStuff Studio S.L., and Héctor Serrano, one of the exhibition’s authors.

After its stops in Valencia and participation in events such as the ‘Madrid Design Festival’, ‘Barcelona Design Week’, and the ‘Feria del Hábitat’, the exhibition arrives in Tenerife with the strong purpose of promoting a change in mentality regarding the use of plastics and contributing to the protection of the marine environment of the archipelago.

José Carlos Acha, Councilor of Culture and Museums of Tenerife, highlighted the museum’s role in strengthening the Cabildo’s «environmental commitment» and the value of scientific dissemination to raise awareness among the public through this powerful visual and scientific proposal.

Acha added that one of the key elements of the exhibition is the scientific project ABIOCONPLAS, developed by the Museo de Ciencias Naturales de Tenerife, which investigates the effect of microplastics on marine plankton in the Macaronesia region.

«This exhibition not only offers a critical view of plastic use but also conveys a message of hope through innovation, research, and circular economy,» he emphasized.

The project, conceived by Carmen Baselga, Héctor Serrano, and SoGood Stuff, encourages reflection and action against a problem that already affects on a global scale, as more than 8 million tons of plastic end up in the sea each year, a number that could double by 2025 if urgent measures are not taken.

‘La mar de plástico’ highlights the seriousness of marine pollution and acts as a catalyst to promote changes in plastic use habits, while also encouraging the creation of products from recycled materials and thus fostering a more circular and sustainable economy.
