ARRECIFE (LANZAROTE), 8 (EUROPA PRESS)
Agents of the National Police have arrested two young people, aged 20 and 16, as alleged perpetrators of a series of fires that affected Arrecife (Lanzarote) during the months of February, March, and April 2025, affecting both urban furniture and parked vehicles.
The arrests occurred after agents of the Judicial Police Group, in coordination with the Scientific Police of the National Police, took over the investigations that, from the beginning, pointed to intentional fires, ruling out motivations linked to threats or other serious crimes, as reported by the police in a press release.
Thus, thanks to the collaboration of the Local Police of Arrecife, the surveillance cameras of shops and traffic, as well as citizen collaboration, identified the two young people, who operated on specific routes and were seen moving on an electric skateboard, facilitating their escape from the scene.
Finally, the agents arrested them on May 2 after a «laborious reconstruction» of the itinerary and physical characteristics of the suspects, as both lack police records.
Following their arrest, the older boy was brought before a judge, released on bail, while the 16-year-old was handed over to the Minors Prosecutor’s Office in Las Palmas.
As for the motivations behind these acts of vandalism, they have not yet been clarified, although it is presumed that they could be related «to the pursuit of notoriety, as the authors avoided staying in the affected areas after causing the fires.»
