Comienza el VII Encuentro de los Mares en Tenerife con competición solidaria y degustaciones.

The Encounter of the Seas, promoted by the Cabildo de Tenerife and organized by Vocento Gastronomía, kicked off this Sunday with a solidarity sports competition in the waters that bathe the southern coast of Tenerife.

Thus, from the Playa de los Cristianos, in Arona, to Tarajales, back and forth, several participants got wet with the aim of making visible the benefits of swimming practice among women who have had breast cancer, shaping the first solidarity Sea Encounter Swim, as reported by the Tenerife Cabildo in a press release.

The swim, which was open to anyone who wanted to join, had the participation of young swimmers from the Club Náutico de Santa Cruz de Tenerife as well as a group of women from the breast cancer association Ámate, for whom swimming is a therapeutic sports practice in their recovery processes from this disease.

Leading the way was long-distance swimmer Christian Jongeneel, one of the world’s leading specialists in long sea crossings, accustomed to swimming in open seas for various causes through his association Brazadas Solidarias.

GASTRONOMY DAY ON THE STREETS

And after this activity, a Marine Gastronomic Fair began at the Plaza de la Pescadora, in Los Cristianos, bringing together several local and mainland restaurants to offer tastings at affordable prices, as well as two showcookings and live music.

Just steps from the beach and with the sea in the background, the Encounter of the Seas started talking about gastronomy and fishing with a workshop in which the chef Juan Carlos Clemente performed the boning of a tuna live, with explanations from the marine biologist and fishing technician of the Cabildo Agustín Espinosa.

Later, the workshop on marine charcuterie by Ángel León, chef of Aponiente*** (Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz), was added to the day, a showcooking in which he shared the secrets of making these charcuterie products from red tuna, sea bass, or lemon fish.

TASTINGS

These preparations, in addition, were tasted by attendees at the Marine Gastronomic Fair, as Aponiente was one of the invited restaurants of the day. Thus, the team of Ángel León served their tapas alongside another restaurant specially brought to Tenerife for the occasion, such as Cal Paradís* (Vall d’Alba, Castellón), by the Valencian chef Miguel Barrera, who arrived with his Castelló arrosset.

They were joined by several chefs from the island, such as Jesús Marrero, from El Ancla restaurant (El Médano); Alberto Margallo, from San Sebastián 57 (Santa Cruz de Tenerife); Pedro Nel (Etéreo, Santa Cruz de Tenerife); and Samuel Hernández (Zoco Restaurant, Los Cristianos). Marrero offered a maritime stew of Atlantic tunas that perfectly complemented the black potato salad with king crab and aioli foam from the chef of San Sebastián 57, Alberto Margallo.

The most international touch was provided by the proposals of Pedro Nel and Samuel Hernández who, respectively, prepared a ceviche causa and an old octopus stew with muhammara yolks.

ENCOUNTER OF THE SEAS

With Sunday’s event, more popular and open to all residents of Tenerife, the Encounter of the Seas kicked off the seventh edition of a congress where scientists, chefs, and fishermen will gather on the island to address the defense of the oceans.

Starting today, three professional days will follow in which, on this occasion, the discussion will revolve around salt as an essential component of the oceans, a gastronomic ingredient, and a cultural link between humans and the sea.
