The President of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, positively values the collaboration of the Government of the Canary Islands in financing the drainage works in both Arrecife and Costa Teguise, the two areas most affected by the torrential rains of April 12.
The Government of the Canary Islands will finance with one million euros the project called «Specific actions for the improvement of urban rainwater drainage in the Argana area», in Arrecife, developed by the Insular Water Council.
This morning, the President of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, announced this after meeting at the headquarters of the insular corporation with the President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo.
In addition, the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Ministry of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion, and Water, will be in charge of drafting the «Construction project for water lamination and defense of the urban core of Costa Teguise at the head of the Hurón Ravine – Costa Teguise» in the municipality of Teguise.
The President of the Cabildo expressed his gratitude to Clavijo for «his concern from the first minute for the consequences of the downpour that fell on Lanzarote, especially on Arrecife and Costa Teguise, as well as for the response he has offered us for the financing of the drainage projects.»
President Clavijo, on his part, stated that «it is a pleasure to work with the Cabildo de Lanzarote because they have a clear roadmap to follow on the island, and within that framework, things flow smoothly.»
Both drainage projects have been approved in the Government Council of the Canary Islands held this morning at the Casa de la Cultura Agustín de la Hoz in Arrecife.
Actions in Argana Alta and the Hurón Ravine
The Government of the Canary Islands will transfer the funding for this project, budgeted at 959,152.48 euros, to the Insular Water Council, which will put it out to tender once it has the administrative collaboration of the Arrecife City Council for the works.
Basically, the works of this project consist of carrying out specific actions in the rainwater drainage network of Argana Alta. During its execution, the corresponding demolition, excavation, and trench filling, concrete, pavements, pipelines, etc., will be carried out.
There is a rainwater channel in Argana Alta where connections can be made to drain excess rainwater. The channel has a total of six branches at its inception: head of Trillo Street, head of Campoamor Street, start of the collection branch of Tenderete Street, head of León de Felipe Street, start of the collection branch of the Toyota bridge on LZ-20, and start of the collection branch of Rápido Street.
The actions to improve rainwater drainage will be carried out around these six branches, which will join together, becoming two main ones, and later into a single one at the intersection between Medular ravine and Triana Street, from which the water is discharged into the sea at the point called Punta del Camello.
The Government of the Canary Islands has also committed to drafting the «Construction project for water lamination and defense of the urban core of Costa Teguise at the head of the Hurón Ravine – Costa Teguise» in the municipality of Teguise, which also suffered the consequences of the torrential rains of April 12.
This action aims to reduce the flow of rainwater collected by the basins that flow into the Hurón Ravine, thus preventing soil erosion, which in turn will allow the storage of rainwater, with the prospect of its use for agricultural purposes or irrigation of public gardens.
