The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, stated on Friday that the stance of the autonomous communities governed by the PP at the sectorial conference discussing the distribution of unaccompanied migrant minors is «indecent» and a «disgrace.»
Speaking to journalists during a visit to the Southern Hospital, he commented that it follows the «same trend» of recent months where the archipelago and the minors are disrespected, some of whom «have seen their parents die on the journey and thrown overboard from a boat.»
«You can disagree, you can be against it, but what you cannot do is absent yourself because it is disrespectful,» he remarked, also criticizing the central government for the lack of transfers of asylum-seeking minors, as the State «keeps making excuses.»
Clavijo pointed out that «Canarias continues to be alone,» but he assured that his government will not «give up» and will «keep fighting» because «in the end, reason will prevail, common sense, decency, humanity,» and the islands will be respected, and those children will be cared for as they deserve.
Questioned about Madrid’s refusal to accommodate asylum-seeking minors, he indicated that «the law is approved, and the Government of Spain must enforce the law as the Supreme Court has stated in two rulings, they have not attended to these minors who are their responsibility and continue to neglect them.»
The President mentioned that he does not want to «get involved» in the game between the PSOE and PP and demands that the Government focus on its «responsibilities,» as ordered by the Supreme Court, and hopes that the announcement made by the Minister of Childhood, Sira Rego, that transfers will begin on August 28, will be fulfilled.
