The Ministry of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands has started this Tuesday the recording of the video-podcast ‘Stories that employ’, through which figures linked to the labor and business world of the Canary Islands will pass to analyze the challenges and opportunities of the job market in the islands.

The format, driven for the first time by technicians from the Canarian Employment Observatory (Obecan) and the Canarian Foundation for the Promotion of Work (Funcatra), in collaboration with the Development Society of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, seeks to bring institutions closer to the citizens, especially young people, who have changed the way they consume content and increasingly consult the news and current affairs through social networks like TikTok or Instagram.

The Minister of Tourism and Employment, Jéssica de León, valued the initiative of the technicians, who through these podcasts also hope to reach entrepreneurs and unemployed people to inform them of all the resources available to them from the administration. «It is a project that aims to tell what we do from the Canarian Employment Service (SCE), from Obecan and Funcatra, entities absolutely unknown to the young population and even to a generation that already handles new technology, but is unaware of where the opportunities are and is unaware of where there are free training courses, employability aids, or entrepreneurship.»

In addition, Jéssica de León emphasized that «the other objective is to humanize public entities that, on occasion, use a language alien to the citizen. We needed those who receive these services to be heard, to understand the barriers they face in accessing employment or reconciling their personal life, as well as to make known the ins and outs of the administration. For this, it has been driven by the technicians of Funcatra and the officials, and we have rolled out the red carpet for them to tell what they do on a day-to-day basis.»

The minister recalled that «50% of the population already gets information from social networks, and we had to be there, as it is a generation that has grown up in technology and we tell them the tools they have to move forward and many are also overqualified. In this way, we tell them what the government is working on and explain job niches, how markets are coming, what trends there are in hiring, what courses are available, where they can take that qualification without talent leakage. Also for the long-term unemployed, and we give them information about those courses that they can often do from home.»

Jéssica de León stressed that «when we arrived in government, there was a 37% youth unemployment rate, and today we are below 8,000, approaching 22%, and with respect to the long-term unemployed, we had never had a figure below 70,000, who were at 77,000. These are two groups that we have been integrating into the labor market and we want to lower this figure even more.»

The video-podcast will consist of a total of six episodes, each lasting half an hour, and will be set in the Palacio de Carta in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Among the guests are Dormitorum’s CEO, Alexis Amaya, and the head of the juvenile court number 1 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and president of the Up2U association Reyes Martel, who works for the social and labor integration of young people from vulnerable groups. They will be presented by the director of the Canarian Employment Observatory (Obecan), Luis Prieto, who has been a technician at this entity for over 25 years.

The manager of Funcatra, Óscar Mata, emphasized that «each episode will delve into the personal and professional history of the guests, in which there are moments of success, but also of frustration, fear, and sacrifice. We hope that these stories will serve as inspiration for the people who watch the podcast, but also to identify where we can improve from the institutions.»

For the director of Obecan, Luis Prieto, «young people are the future and not thinking about them is mortgaging the present of the Canary Islands and also its future. Moving on social networks is essential because the future workers are there to guide them where to work and not leave them alone when the decisions they have to make are so important for them and for the future of the Canary Islands.»

Prieto continued explaining that «this way of communicating will serve to give importance to what we do and also learn from the entrepreneurs, the unemployed, the mothers who join the labor market, and the stories allow us to design policies tailored to the real needs of the people.» «We seek the human side of people. Statistics are very cold, but we turn them into people who feel and we tell it instead of in third person to first person,» he said.

For her part, the CEO of the Development Society of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Carmen Pérez, stated that «it is an honor to be able to collaborate with this initiative and host the recording of this video podcast at the Palacio de Carta in the capital, which is not only a tourist office, but also a symbol of our culture, our architectural heritage, and a fundamental piece of the history of the municipality.»

In the talks, different topics that are key to the future of the islands will be addressed, such as support for entrepreneurship; the reconciliation of workers and self-employed; the reasons for rejecting job offers; new professions; strategic sectors; or employment policies for vulnerable groups.

The first episode will be available on Sunday, July 6 on the social networks of the Ministry of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands and Obecan, where a new chapter will be released every Sunday.
